Atomic pair distribution function analysis from the ARCS chopper spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source

چکیده
Neutron powder diffraction based atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs) are reported from the new wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The spectrometer was run in white-beam mode with no Fermi chopper. The PDF patterns of Ni and Al2O3 were refined using the PDFfit method and the results compared to data collected at the NPDF diffractometer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The resulting fits are of high quality demonstrating that quantitatively reliable powder diffraction data can be obtained from ARCS when operated in this configuration. Neutron powder diffraction measurements can be carried out routinely using timeof-flight (TOF) instruments at spallation sources such as the NPDF at the Los Alamos PREPRINT: Journal of Applied Crystallography A Journal of the International Union of Crystallography

Quantitative structure refinement from the ARCS chopper spectrometer
The new wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been successfully used in whitebeam mode, with no Fermi chopper, to obtain neutron powder diffraction based atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs). Obtained PDF patterns of Si, Ni, and Al2O3 were refined using the PDFfit method and the results compared to data collected ...
متن کاملDesign and operation of the wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source.
The wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is optimized to provide a high neutron flux at the sample position with a large solid angle of detector coverage. The instrument incorporates modern neutron instrumentation, such as an elliptically focused neutron guide, high speed magnetic bearing choppers, and a massive array of (3)He linear position sensi...
متن کاملThe new cold neutron chopper spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source: design and performance.
The design and performance of the new cold neutron chopper spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge are described. CNCS is a direct-geometry inelastic time-of-flight spectrometer, designed essentially to cover the same energy and momentum transfer ranges as IN5 at ILL, LET at ISIS, DCS at NIST, TOFTOF at FRM-II, AMATERAS at J-PARC, PHAROS at LANSCE, and NEAT at HZB, at ...
متن کاملPrinciples for Timing at Spallation Neutron Sources Based on Developments at Lansce
Due to AC-power-grid frequency fluctuations, the designers for accelerator-based spallation-neutron facilities have worked to optimize the conflicting demands of accelerator and neutron chopper performance. For the first time, we are able to quantitatively access the tradeoffs between these two constraints and design or upgrade a facility to optimize total system performance using powerful new ...

Deep inelastic neutron scattering has been used to measure the neutron Compton profile (NCP) of a series of condensed He samples at densities from 28.8 a toms/nm 3 (essentially the minimum possible density in the solid phase) up to 39.8 atoms/nm 3 using a chopper spectrometer at the Argonne National Laboratory Intense Pulsed Neutron Source. At the lowest density, the N C P was measured along an...
